There are four types of female genital mutilation, the most common types of female genital mutilation are: the removal or the partial removal of the clitoris (Leye, Powell, Nienhuis, Claeys & Temmerman, 2006, p. 363). Another type for female genital mutilation is removal of the clitoris and full (or partial) removal of the labia minora (Leye, Powell, Nienhuis, Claeys & Temmerman, 2006, p. 363).
Type 1
Partial or full removal of the clitoris
Type 2
Removal of the clitoris and full (or partial) removal of the labia minora.
Type 3: Infibulation
Partial or full removal of the outer genitalia and stitching to close (or partially close) the vaginal opening
Type 4: Unclassified Procedures
“Pricking, piercing, or incision of the clitoris and/or labia; stretching of the clitoris and/or labia; cauterisation by burning of the clitoris and surrounding tissues; scraping of the vaginal orifice (angurya cuts) or cutting of the vagina (gishiri cuts); introduction of corrosive substances or herbs into the vagina to tighten it or to cause bleeding” (WHO as cited by Leye et al, 2006, p. 363).
